Günter Kunert

Günter Kunert, poeta, prosista y artista gráfico, es una de las figuras más prominentes de la literatura contemporánea alemana. Kunert nació en Berlin en 1929. Por ser hijo de madre judía fue excluido del sistema educacional durante el período regido por el socialismo nacional. Después de la segunda guerra mundial se matriculó en la prestigiosa academia de arte GDR, en Weißensee, pero abandonó sus estudios para dedicarse enteramente a la escritura. En los años cincuenta Johannes R. Becher descubrió su talento y le brindó su apoyo. Durante ésa época, también, Kunert entabló amistad con Bertolt Brecht. Después de 1960, sin embargo, la incompatibilidad de su escritura satírica con la doctrina socialista se tornó obvia y comienzó a ganar reconocimiento en el mundo occidental, lo que le permitió al comienzo de los años setenta salir de la República Democrática Alemana y aceptar posiciones como escritor en residencia en los EEUU y en Gran Bretaña. Kunert fue uno de los intelectuales que firmó la petición contra la revocación de la ciudadanía de Biermann en 1975 y, eventualmente, él mismo se alejó de la República. Desde 1979 Kunert reside en Kaisborstel, una pequeña ciudad en la región norte de Alemania. Sus obras más recientes de poesía incluyen Nachtvorstellung (1999) y So und nicht anders (2002). Günter Kunert, poet, prose author and graphic artist, is one of the most prominent figures in the contemporary German literary landscape. Born in Berlin in 1929 of a Jewish mother, he was excluded from the educational system during National Socialism. After WW II he enrolled at the prestigious GDR art academy in Weißensee, but abandoned his studies to become a full-time writer. In the 1950s he was discovered and supported by Johannes R. Becher and befriended Bertolt Brecht. However, after 1960, the incompatibility of his satirical writings with socialist doctrine became increasingly obvious. At the same time the Western audience began to discover Kunert's poems and short prose. In the early 1970s, his growing international reputation enabled him to travel outside of the GDR and to accept writers' residencies in the USA . and Britain . Kunert, one of the intellectuals who signed the petition against Biermann's revocation of citizenship in 1975, eventually left the GDR himself. Since 1979, he has been living in Kaisborstel, a small town in Northern Germany . His most recent books of poetry are Nachtvorstellung (1999) and So und nicht anders (2002).
